When it comes to a job interview, there is no room for error.

You want to impress by your credentials, soft skills and of course your outfit.

Most of the time you choose the safe way (white button down and navy or black pencil skirt or slacks) to impress, because you want to play it safe. The interview in itself can be nerve wrecking (especially if it’s THE JOB), so who has the energy to think about the perfect interview outfit?

But does an outfit with more personal style require much planning? Does the same old really make you memorable?

How about showing a bit more personality without having to open your mouth first, while maintaining professionalism?

Swapping out dark colors with grey is a refreshing change and by the way, grey is going to take over the fashion scene this fall. This look very is simple, and all business, yet it does differentiate you from the crowd. Plus your outfit may well be the ice breaker small talk.

When it comes to the actual interview, be prepared! Brush up your story and know why you want that particular job at that particular company.

And avoid cliches like these!

1. I’m the ideal employee

No kidding?! How many times do you think an HR person has heard this before? This statement is very general. You have to specify why the company should choose you over the other 156 applicants.

2. I’m a team player

…until you fill out a “bullet proof” personality test and it states otherwise. But if you are a true team player, phrase this differently and bring up examples from previous projects and your role within the team.

3. I’m a hard worker

Companies want smart workers in the first place who are willing to go the extra mile. You are selling yourself during a job interview, but again this is way too vague. What was your most recent project you worked on where you went the extra mile to get the job done?

4. I’m open to anything

No, you’re not! Yes, you may well be desperate trying to get a job, but you have to keep things and your goals in perspective! The interviewer will sense it instantly if they are talking to someone who just wants a job. They want someone who is ready, willing and able to commit and walk the highs and lows to succeed. And desperation for a new job just won’t cut it on a long run, since this would mean for them having to post that same position again within a year.
